Hello, I inherited a 1964 MGB (3 bearing main) with a 4 speed with overdrive installed but not hooked up. The model D uses a vacuum solenoid on the firewall. I have found the yellow and yellow/red stripe and white wires, and etc. The relay and everything is in the car and appears correct (?). However, from where does the solenoid on the firewall get vacuum? The manifold I assume? I need help with the correct (factory) installation. Thank you, John

Hi Zack,

I totally agree with David on the flexible lines.  They can cause all kinds of issues as he described.  I will make sure to replace them every time I do a brake job on my B.

I didn't see whether the issue was with the front or rear brakes that were dragging?  Or if you had you used the handbrake anytime before the issue?  You just mentioned the handle was not up, so I would think maybe you did while parked.

If asked, I'd bet you can't remember when you last greased the handbrake cable.  There's a zerk for this about mid way up the cable from the rear axle that tends to be forgotten. In fact, in writing this I'm reminded I didn't do it myself when I did my spring tune-up a couple of weeks ago. 

Rust or hardened grease can build-up in the cable casing and the cable can bind and hold the rear brakes, even after the handle is dropped.  Like the 'check valve' action of the rubber lines, the cable can slowly (or suddenly) release, freeing the brakes without any evidence of an issue with the exception that all the paint has been burned-off your rear drums from the heat.

The height of the car, from the ground to the bottom of the chrome strip, should be equal – the same on all four corners.  A variation of ˝” is not worrisome or noticeable.

It’s not uncommon to purchase new rear springs that are too stiff which will hold the back end too high.
The front coil springs change several times throughout production years AND between the roadster and the GT. 
The only real difficultly in refitting your old springs is removing the anti-sway bar link from the A Arm and spring pan. 

Your suspension is basically the same as a 1950 TD and a 1980 MGB and many of the components remain the same though out those years and models!

The crossmember is the same between the GT and roadster.  A rubber bumper crossmember is very different from the earlier ones and would set the front of your MGB perhaps two inches higher

New coil springs are relatively inexpensive and the quality is OK.
