I am working on a 1979 MG . I am trying to install a mechanical not electric water temperature gauge. The fitting that  came with the kit will not work to replace the sending unit in the head.

Can you offer any help as to where to get the right fitting. Thank you.

Joey Mcrary

If you are fitting a Smith's gauge, the sensor bulb  is the same thread and should work.  The thread is 5/8-18.  If you need a stand off with a base for the temp bulb, use one from a Midget (Moss 361-055).
If you are fitting a non-original gauge, I can't help without seeing pictures and having measurements.  Consider continue using your electric gauge if the sending units are correct.    Hope this little bit helps.
