Rear axle oil leaks MGB
« on: April 20, 2009, 02:19:50 PM »
Hi,
I have a 1967 MGB Mk1 roadster with the later semi-floating or "tube" axle. It is fitted with steel disc wheels.
I am getting an oil leak from the pinion shaft oil seal, where the prop shaft attaches.
I have also been getting some grease/oil appearing from beneath the hub caps.
I located and checked the oil breather on the right rear axle and it did not appear to be blocked. I do not believe there are any other breathers?.
The oil has been in for some time and the leaks have only started over this last 12 months.
Anything I could have missed?.
I understand that to rebuild this type of axle that special equipment is required to measure the torque loading at the pinion shaft and has to be done at a repair/ rebuild shop. Is this the case, and if so, any recommendations?.

Thanks in advance,
Mark
